Texas coach Rodney Terry always wanted to follow in his father's footsteps. And Calvin Phillips seemed to know that one day, his son would land the dream job.

New Texas NCAA college basketball head coach Rodney Terry talks to the media during a news conference in Austin, Texas, Tuesday, March 28, 2023. AUSTIN — Rodney Terry loved the game enough to play it through college, but there wasn’t exactly a pipeline running from Division II St. Edward’s to the NBA.

Terry spoke often of his father down the stretch of a tempestuous season that began with him as former Texas head coach Chris Beard’s top assistant and ended with him in his ex-boss’s seat. He’d recall how anytime a high-profile job became available — like when Villanova’s Jay Wright retired in 2021 — the ever-spirited Phillips would call and say, “Go get it.”

Phillips coached boys basketball and football at high schools over the state. Hucky Man spent time at Cleveland, Wharton, Columbia, Stafford, Brazoswood, Angleton, Dickinson, Brazosport and Livingston, all the while leaving an imprint on the communities he embraced and the teenagers he taught.
