Texas AG Paxton banks $4.9 million as Democratic foe Garza scrambles to catch up

Paxton has been under indictment for securities fraud nearly his entire time in office, but a number of side issues and Harvey-related courthouse damage haveHis ethics again came under scrutiny in late 2020 whenalleging he abused the power of his office and took bribes from a friend and campaign donor. Paxton, whose campaign did not respond to a request for comment for this story, has denied all wrongdoing, characterizing the accusations as political witch hunts.
Garza’s largest contributions came from the Border Health PAC ; Tomas Torres, a retired CPA according to his LinkedIn ; and Lynne Dobson, an Austin philanthropist whose family owned the Whataburger hamburger chain until selling the company in 2019 . Political experts have said for months that as a political newcomer, Garza would likely need a multimillion dollar foundation to make the advertising push required for a statewide race in which she’s courting millions of voters.
