Texas A&M's enrollment has soared, but the Corps of Cadets hasn't kept pace. Leaders want to change that.

A officer of the day guards the field as The Fighting Texas Aggie Band performs during halftime of the football game against Massachusetts at Kyle Field on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022 in College Station. Texas A&M University's Corps of Cadets is amid a campaign to grow the organization to 3,000 members by 2030. At more than 2,100 members this year, the Corps is already the largest uniformed student body in the nation outside of the military academies.

They have a quick break before they need to head to Kyle Field, where the Aggies are playing the University of Massachusetts Minutemen for Military Appreciation Day. Walsh and Winchester are two of the Corps’ top-ranking student leaders, and they stop to chat with their fellow cadets between duties.Texas A&M faculty accuse president of excluding them from major campus decisions

Aggies would be hard-pressed to find a university tradition that didn’t begin with the Corps or involve the group in some way – participation was mandatory until 1965. And the organization still upholds those traditions: All members of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band are in the Corps. Reveille, the school’s Rough Collie mascot, is handled by a sophomore cadet in Company E-2. A&M’s famous 12th Man was a member.

“For every cadet that leaves this ground at A&M, they’re going into a team of probably a lot of other people that weren’t cadets and they’re being able to share their skills and apply the experiences that they’ve had,” Winchester said. “Imagine adding another 900 to 1000 people – that’s a dramatically increased impact on Texas, on the US, and on the world.”The Fighting Texas Aggie Band play during the Texas A&M football game against Massachusetts at Kyle Field on Saturday, Nov.

“We have all the resources, and we have the guidance of how to take somebody and make them disciplined and show character and morals and hold up the traditions of A&M,” she said. “So the idea of this retention and higher numbers is totally doable.” Michaelis said maintaining quality is the main concern he hears from cadets, and he often pushes back. The term is relative, and the Corps leadership changed its approach recently to make sure everybody is able to succeed – away from previous methods that saw cadets pushed to their limits in an effort to siphon out people thought of as weak links.
