With a work ethic forged by his family in Humble, Jerrod Johnson is on upward track in...
Carlos Javier Sanchez, Freelance / For the ChronicleWhen Marquis thinks back to that moment, he says he probably shouldn’t have been surprised.
So in the moment that the group of camp coaches were meeting, Marquis realized that Jerrod was going to be a coach someday. If all goes well with the Texans, Johnson could be a candidate for future offensive coordinator jobs and eventually an NFL head coaching job. This is important because the NFL continues to struggle in hiring Black coaches. There are currently only three Black head coaches in the NFL, including Ryans.Right now, Johnson isn’t thinking about that.
But one player dropped out of the competition opening the door for Stroud to participate. Johnson was selected as Stroud’s coach for the competition. Johnson and Stroud’s team won the competition, and Stroud was named MVP. Shortly after, he earned a scholarship offer to Ohio State. That moment made an impression on Johnson.
As a redshirt junior, Johnson won the starting role in camp over Ryan Tannehill. Johnson passed for 342 yards and four touchdowns in the regular-season finale against Texas and entered his senior season as a Heisman candidate. But he had shoulder surgery and struggled through his first few games before eventually losing the starting role to Tannehill.
There are times when he wishes he had made a better throw here, or a better throw there. And he wants to help players, so they don’t have those same regrets.
