TerraceBC hosts first-ever Pride Prom

The largest event hosted to date by the Terrace Pride Pals social and support group took place June 10 when the first-ever Pride Prom was held at the Sherwood Mountain Brewhouse event hall.
“At the beginning of this year I was like ‘I really want to do an event in June for Pride Month that’s big, bigger than anything we’ve ever done,’” said Oli Sherrill, one of five regular volunteers at Terrace Pride Pals. “Normally our events are like board game nights or just hangouts — we did gingerbread making for Christmas — so we wanted to do something a lot bigger for Pride Month. so that’s why we came up with pride prom.”Terrace to host its inaugural Pride Prom, aiming to boost inclusion in northern B.C.
The Terrace Pride Pals Facebook group began shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Now that things have opened up, they are back to in-person events. “Last summer we did a stand at Riverboat Days and people came past our groups and they were like ‘we’ve lived in Terrace for 10 years we had no idea there was a pride group; I’m a lesbian, I’m gay all this stuff — it’s like the older generation of queer people, too, and they didn’t know that we exist and they felt that that was still something that they had to be a little more selective about and they couldn’t do the big rainbows and the big get out thing, and now people are becoming more...
