The term of the Tax Ombud, Judge Bernard Ngoepe, came to an end on 30 September 2022, after nearly a decade. He has been the Ombud since the inception of the Office of the Tax Ombud in 2013. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has appointed Thabo Legwaila as the acting Tax Ombud for a period of three months until he has identified a suitable candidate to replace Ngoepe. Legwaila is currently the CEO of the OTO. Ngoepe’s term has been extended twice.
“This continues to be necessary given the fact that the OTO plays an oversight role over Sars when it comes to the treatment of taxpayers. It is an objective which must be achieved if there is to be any good governance,” says Ngoepe. “Taxpayers deserve no less. It is hoped that the next Tax Ombud will not compromise on this, as doing so would be a serious betrayal of taxpayers.
