Ribble Valley's tentative wait over Government decision on huge Forest of Bowland water tunnel
Councillors are hoping a government announcement will come soon about whether the United Utilities Haweswater Aqueduct water tunnel plan, running from the Lake District through Lancashire to Greater Manchester, will be called-in for national inspection.
However, objectors’ worries include the possible impact of construction traffic on old homes and villages such as Waddington, and protection of businesses, landscapes and rivers. Speaking this week, Coun Ged Mirfin said: “The call-in decision process normally takes around six weeks following a gathering of evidence by civil servants and an assessment. It is now over 80 days since the Ribble Valley planning committee voted to delegate the application to the council’s Director of Economic Development.
“This is delaying key investment decisions, especially for hospitality and wedding businesses whose ability to thrive and give a much-needed boost to the economy, are dependent on visitor numbers.
