Shoppers should be prepared to pay more and compromise on quality when buying their turkey for Christmas dinner this year after the UK’s worstAround one third of all free-range turkeys that were supposed to be heading to farm shops and supermarkets in time for Christmas have been lost to the outbreak so far, according the British Poultry Council. This is due to infection or as a result of culls carried out after other members of their flocks contracted the disease.
Free-range birds are far more vulnerable to the highly infectious flu because they have access to outdoor roaming space, where they are more likely to come into contact with an infected bird. Charles Allen, an equity research analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, said consumers should not be surprised to see price rises. “The potential for shortages of certain birds is going to affect some people…[They] will have to make some kind of compromise by buying a different bird to the one they wanted to,” he said.
The frozen food retailer Iceland predicted many consumers would swap fresh turkey for frozen: “Demand for frozen turkeys is expected to be driven higher this year by the increasing financial pressures which many families are under, as frozen turkeys are generally much cheaper to buy than fresh alternatives. We are already seeing significant uplifts in sales for this time of year.
