Diego Huerta testified Wednesday that he stabbed his landlord, Sofien Kazdaghli, once and then “all of a sudden everything went black and time kind of froze.”
A tenant was trying to defend himself when he stabbed his Vancouver landlord and then went into a dissociative state, a defence lawyer said Wednesday.
He told B.C. Supreme Court Justice Terence Schultes that Kazdaghli tried to extort Huerta, who had earlier paid his rent, for more money and threatened to kick him out of the apartment. Johnson said that Dr. Todd Tomita, a forensic psychiatrist, will offer his opinion that Huerta entered into the dissociative state during the struggle. Johnson urged the judge to acquit his client of murder.
Under questioning from defence lawyer Andrew Nelson, Huerta said he was scared and confused and “starting to get angry” and took a step back and grabbed a knife. When Kazdaghli tried to grab his crotch again and waved the bottle back and forth, he decided to lunge toward Kazdaghli with the knife to try to get away from him and stabbed him in the left side.
Under cross-examination, he admitted that he had stolen money from the victim after the slaying and that until the alleged confrontation in the apartment, his dealings with the victim were cordial and pleasant.
