Man United's midfield has struggled this season despite Erik ten Hag making two new signings.
As Darwin Nunez somehow conspired to hit the post, after doing all the hard work amazingly by leaving a centre-back and goalkeeper for dead, with an open goal at his mercy, everyone else was either splitting their sides laughing or stunned into motionless disbelief.
As the Brazilian's drop-off this season has shown, it was a pertinent line of thinking and United considered some intriguing targets. In the end, it was Chelsea's Mason Mount who was first to arrive in a deal which could reach £60m and Sofyan Amrabat was finally secured on deadline day. Gravenberch was spoken in the same breath as Jude Bellingham as the game's next great midfielder when he was rising to prominence at Ajax, under the stewardship of a certain Ten Hag. But while Bellingham picked his clubs to perfection, Gravenberch made a bad move.
Instead, Ten Hag focused on Mount but that didn't mean Gravenberch still couldn't have been signed. In fact, it wasn't until the last two weeks of the window did United truly consider making a move as Ten Hag was still keen on adding to his midfield options. But at that point, budget restrictions proved costly.
They may indeed be successful commercially, but on the pitch, the total apathy has led to a steady decline. Thoughtless overspending and ludicrous handing out of lucrative contracts have left the club a carrion prime for picking in the transfer market.
