Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has defended his decision that left Cristiano Ronaldo visibly fuming during their draw with Newcastle United on Sunday. 👀 More here! ➡
The Portuguese forward endured another frustrating outing with the Red Devils as he was unable to get on the scoresheet after netting his first league goal this season against Everton in their previous Premier League match. Ronaldo had two goals ruled out against the Magpies, with his first strike being correctly overruled for offside while the other goal involved him cheekily robbing shot-stopper Nick Pope of the ball and putting it in the back of the net.
The veteran had claimed that the ball was in play as Newcastle defender Fabian Schar passed the ball to the goalkeeper for a free-kick to be taken, with the striker receiving a yellow card for his efforts. Once 72 minutes had passed and still no team was able to break the deadlock, Ten Hag decided to replace the 37-year-old with Marcus Rashford, and the Portugal captain appeared to disagree with this decision as he was visibly annoyed while walking off the pitch.
Despite that change, though, United remained unable to break the deadlock as Rashford missed a clear-cut chance to give them the lead in the last seconds of the tie. "We have to cover four games in 10 days," Ten Hag said, per the "I want to keep the strikers fresh. We have to rotate there.
"Then, we dictated the game and in the end we could – we should – have scored the winning goal. One from Fred, and then [Marcus] Rashford had to score."It is a big compliment to the team that we deserved this with a physical performance against one of the most physical teams in the league. "The team understands from front to back we co-operate together. We are hard to beat and we must keep that going.
