Nearly every city office got more cash, and climate funds are up 160%. Supply shortages endanger large projects and staffers brace for money issues.
Tens of millions of dollars for infrastructure and a big boost in climate spending are some of the standout pieces ofTempe's citywide budget contains about $120 million in extra funding this year, according to a review by The Arizona Republic. City officials mainly credit better-than-expected revenues in 2021 for the overall bump.
“We've seen inflation. We've adjusted for it in this budget. We don't see it impacting anything significant at this point,” Duensing told The Republic. “We watch it all the time, and if inflation continues at its current pace, it could affect programs. But we don't anticipate that at this point.” It’s unclear if the backlog and persistent resource shortages will jam up Tempe’s “significant” project plans for this year, which accounted for a $61 million boost in new funding.
Tempe's electric vehicle program may involve new city rules that incentivize businesses to install charging stations, similar to efforts in cities such as Tucson. The perks can range from looser size restrictions to extra parking to subsidies for the equipment. But despite Sustainability's funds more than doubling, it’s still a low-dollar budget item that represents far less than 1% of Tempe’s total spending this year.
Two other staffers are being hired to help get the office established, and Kay said he plans to work with Maricopa county and other nearby cities to produce some visible results by the end of 2023. “ able to take our money and just get a better return than we can because we're limited in what we can do by state statute,” he said. “We made a big payment during the year and that had the impact of saving money.”
That sentiment was expressed by many attendees who wanted to see the funds redirected to areas like mental health or climate change.
