Newark DJs and producers created the fast-paced mix of rhythmic beats that gained popularity in the 2000s and now dominate New Jersey’s urban club, music and dance scene.
Educator Laura Hollander is the first to admit that she’s not a fan of the fast-paced mix of rhythmic beats that gained popularity in the 2000s and now dominate New Jersey’s urban club, music and dance scene.
Jersey Club is an urban genre created by Newark DJs and producers and played on Newark’s underground house party scene in its early days. Its creators pedaled CDs of the beats on the streets, and over time, they were mixed with well-known tunes and evolved to include dancing. Lana Ellington, 15, of Neptune, never felt a connection to classical music. But she says she loves Jersey Club.
“Once I found Jersey Club, it became an avenue for me to express myself in various ways,” said Myrthil, 16. “Even as a basketball player, I listen to the music before my games to get focused while regulating my emotions — and it’s worked.”“From selling CDs of the records on the street to seeing how accessible it is today is crazy,” he said. “I couldn’t be happier.”
“Pure was the first artist to make music over a club beat,” said Sirius XM’s DJ Taj. “He was definitely that guy to open up doors for labels to see the value in Jersey Club music.”“Stone P has taken this to a whole different level,” he said. “We knew it in the beginning as an underground genre, but he put it on a bigger platform and created a lane for all of us.”
