The incident happened amid altercations that broke out among students following the game Thursday night between Warren Township and Maine South high schools.
“Gurnee officers worked quickly to maintain order and ensure the safety of all attendees,” Gurnee police public information officer Shawn Gaylor said in a statement Tuesday.The juvenile who pepper-sprayed the officer was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and resisting arrest. There were no other injuries reported, according to police.
“The safety and well-being of our community members remain our top priority, and we will continue to work diligently with Warren Township High School to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future,” Gaylor said. Warren Township High School District 121 did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. Main South won the game, 28-7. Warren Township has a home game Friday against Libertyville.
