At 2.59am Alex joined the M55 eastbound heading towards the M6. During this time he continued to make a number of phone calls which went unanswered. He rang his girlfriend's friend who was with her at the time in Tenerife and in that conversation it is said that Alex had said 'I'm not going to be here in the morning'.
The inquest heard that at the time of the crash Alex had a blood alcohol level of 102mcg. The drink-drive limit is 80mcg. There was also evidence for cocaine use in the hours prior to the crash. After indicating to Alex's family that he was satisfied that by the actions taken by Alex show he intended to end his life dad Peter said his son was a "broken lad" and that he wasn't "thinking straight" at the time of the crash.
"Whilst he may have been emotional the law in terms of what sets out somebody's intention is that at that precise moment Alex has deliberately aimed his vehicle at the crash barrier and I am satisfied that at the time of the incident he had the capacity to form the intention and that at that point he intended to end his life."
