After raising over $2 million for abortion funds, 0liviajulianna is helping turn Texas blue.
After her diagnosis, Olivia and her family moved so her parents could start new jobs as caretakers at a children’s home. Olivia’s parents became “houseparents” to children in need and Olivia, the youngest of four, gained eight brothers. “I had the chance to see the child protective system and foster care system up close,” she says. Olivia says she saw how the cycles of poverty, neglect, and sexual abuse can affect foster kids.
As a result of the pain, Olivia developed an eating disorder and lost 30 pounds in two months. Instead of taking her sudden and extreme weight loss as a sign of deteriorating mental health, she was complimented by those around her. “When you’re overweight and you lose weight, everyone congratulates you. At 14, I was deeply in the pits and struggling with eating disorders. I was unhealthy and unhappy and people were praising this unhealthy body that I had.
After her parents divorced and she lost a grandparent, Olivia says she was “full-stop suicidal. As low as a person can go, that’s where I was. And that’s when I —” here, she stops, slightly mocking what she’s about to say, even though it’s the truth — “as they say, I found God.”A family friend saw Olivia’s deteriorating mental state and suggested a church group.
As Olivia was beginning to question what she'd been taught — about when life began and the value of purity and the focus on conservative politics — the world was set on fire by the pandemic. Suddenly, everything she had looked forward to in her last years of high school was canceled. For Olivia, she grieved more than just the loss of her high school experience. “School was a safe place [for me],” she says. “It was my outlet. It was the way I escaped whatever was going on at home.
During that time, she found the political side of TikTok where young people like her were posting about the issues facing their generation. Olivia says the move to politics was a natural one. She has watched every presidential debate since John McCain and Barack Obama in 2008. Though she doesn’t share political views with her dad, she says he shaped her political mind. They would argue about political issues and he urged her to make sure she was always able to back up her beliefs.
