The news came from the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee , which said the incentives were funded by the National Lottery in conjunction with the department of sports, arts and culture.Athletes who won gold will each receive R100 000, silver medalists will pocket R50 000 each, R25 000 will be given to all who who won bronze. The coaches, meanwhile, will each receive R15 000 for gold, R10 000 for silver and R5 000 for bronze.

Swimmers Lara van Niekerk , Pieter Coetze and Tatjana Schoenmaker were the four gold medalist in the aquatics.The men’s rugby sevens team won gold, and although the victory counts as one gold medal, Sascoc said each player would receive R100 000.The final gold medal was won by para-athlete Ndodomzi Ntutu in the men's T12 100 metres.Lawn bowls, boxing, cycling, wrestling and gymnastics were the other codes that secured medals at the games in Birmingham, England.

Sascoc CEO Nozipho Jafta was quoted in a statement released by the umbrella body saying that the incentives “is a small reward to say thank you for representing our nation well”.We are aware that payment of the incentives to our athletes has taken a bit longer than expected, but we are pleased to reward our athletes and their coaches for their hard work and excellence.
