A Team Canada fan flies the Maple Leaf during Monday's IIHF world junior championship opener between Canada and Czechia at Scotiabank Centre. - RYAN TAPLIN / THE CHRONICLE HERALDTeam Canada hockey fans turned the Scotiabank Centre into a sea of red Monday night with a deafening roar of support for the home side in their IIHF world junior championship opener.
“Even when I was very little, we watched the world juniors as a family,” added Sean, 14. “You watch it and cheer for your country but you never expect to be in the crowd cheering for your country. You only expect to see it on TV. To be in the arena for this is an amazing feeling. I don’t want to get out of my seat and get some food because I don’t want to miss any second of it.”
“I didn’t think we would be able to attend any of the games,” Sean Perrin said. “We didn’t know we were coming to the tournament games until yesterday . It took me a minute to process it. Once I did, I went over and gave my dad a hug. I didn’t know if I should cry or smile. I was numb.” The Perrins and the rest of the Canadian faithful were buzzing during the flurry of action in the first period. The crowd nearly blew the roof off when Team Canada captain Shane Wright tipped in Olen Zellweger’s point shot for the game’s opening goal midway through the first period.
Asked what he would do if he had to face the electrifying Bedard, Sean Perrin – who plays goal for the Sackville Flyers U15 A team – jokingly said, “I would probably give up.” But the cheers turned to bleats of disappointment in the second period when Czechia stunned the defending world junior champions with a three-goal outburst to pull ahead 5-2.
