they’re feeling the weight of their profession more than ever before.

Using technology and social media in ways that come naturally to students is one common strategy. In Kansas, high school math teacher Emma Anderson created an Instagram account to keep in touch with her students. Originally, Anderson says she just posted stories of herself explaining what was happening, how online learning was going to work, and what would be expected of students.

Lucy*, a speech-language pathologist in Wisconsin who asked not to use her real name to protect her students’ privacy, says that she and colleagues have been taking turns recording themselves reading stories for low-verbal autistic students. “Everything I do takes several times longer than it would if I were in school. I don’t have any of my materials and can’t interact with most of my students, so I have to plan everything from scratch and in ways that I normally wouldn’t.

For Stobbe, simply acknowledging the physical and emotional barriers is a comfort. “I sent each of my advisory kids a letter telling them what I miss about them, that I have valued having them as my student, and that I am still here . My advisory class is all sixth graders. Next year they’re moving downstairs to the seventh- and eighth-grade hall, and I won’t be their teacher anymore.
