The Day of Impact was a chance for educators to come together and learn new and engaging teaching methods. ContributedTRURO, N.S. — The recent cold snap could not dissuade more than 100 Nova Scotia educators from travelling to the Truro Middle School on Feb. 4 for the Day of Impact., the Day of Impact is a conference for teachers from different school districts to get together and learn about new educational methods that could help in the classroom.
“We come together and talk about innovative practices in the classroom that can have an impact on students,” explained Hinton. “We had 16 sessions for teachers from around the region. It was built by teachers for teachers.”Specialists from around the region joined in to speak on how technology could be integrated into the classroom to help promote learning. Some of the topics included digital storytelling, applying game design elements in education, robotics and coding.
“One of our specialists there was using a piece of software that tracks your eyes and lets you answer questions and do learning tasks with your eyes. That would be for someone who is non-verbal.”Nathalie Landry is a Grade 3 teacher at École acadienne de Truro. After years of being unable to communicate effectively with other educators, she found the conference was a nice way to get together and learn more about the technology available to them.
"That night, I was looking up the resources to familiarize myself more, and some of the games I saw, like literacy centres, I ordered a bunch that night. It really inspired me, and I used them in my class this week, actually.""As we're moving forward, technology is becoming more and more important, and I feel like students nowadays really gravitate towards that kind of stuff.
"We played Bananagrams, where there actually older children had made videos with QR codes so that if you couldn't read the directions, there was a video to explain the game.
