The offshore Southeast Gateway Pipeline will supply natural gas to Mexico’s central and southeast regions, the Canadian pipeline operator added.

The deal with Comisión Federal de Electricidad , Mexico’s national power utility, comes as Canada and the United States are having their most serious trade spat with Mexico over the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Mexico’s North American neighbours lodged a complaint last month against the nationalist energy policy of the government of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, arguing that it discriminates against U.S. and Canadian companies trying to operate in the Latin American country. According to the rules of their 2020 trade agreement, known as USMCA, within 30 days of the filing officials will start holding talks as a first stage in the process to settle the dispute.

Lopez Obrador has spent billions of dollars trying to revive state-owned oil company Petroleos Mexicanos and has changed the law to favour CFE over private-sector energy investors.
