A deadly shootout at the Nyanga taxi rank in Cape Town is believed to have been ignited by financial disputes within a local taxi association. SANTACO, the umbrella body for taxi organizations in the Western Cape, attributes the violence to mismanagement of funds and a lack of accountability within the association, leading to conflict between taxi bosses and members.

CAPE TOWN - Taxi umbrella body SANTACO (South African National Taxi Council) in the Western Cape believes that financial disputes within a certain taxi organization in Cape Town are the root cause of a deadly shootout at the Nyanga taxi rank this week. The incident on Tuesday saw a gun battle erupt between private security officers hired to protect taxi bosses from the same taxi association who are embroiled in a conflict.

One person lost their life, and several others sustained injuries during the violent exchange. Fifteen private security guards from KwaZulu-Natal, a taxi boss, and two other taxi owners have been charged in connection with the shooting. \SANTACO's provincial chairperson, Mandla Hermanus, stated that their understanding is that the conflict stems from a lack of financial transparency and mismanagement within the taxi association. 'Because we are unsubsidized and associations find ways to raise funds so that they can run their operations, sometimes you get people who see an opportunity to control those funds and then when members of the association demand accountability and then problems start when those who control the money don't want to be held accountable by the members,' explained Hermanus. He further elaborated that in some instances, the collected monies are not used for their intended purposes, leading to tensions and grievances among members. \'Sometimes for the members, it's difficult because those who raise issues in terms of holding those who collect these monies accountable, they find themselves being faced with a violent response from those who want to use these monies for their own benefit,' Hermanus added, highlighting the dangerous repercussions of financial impropriety within taxi associations
