Tasha Butts, who played at Tennessee for Pat Summitt, took the Hoyas job in April after four years at Georgia Tech.
Tasha Butts talked about her battle with breast cancer at a Georgia Tech game in February. Tasha Butts, the 41-year-old women’s basketball coach at Georgetown University, has died two years after a diagnosis of advanced stage breast cancer, the school announced Monday morning.
“I am heartbroken for Tasha’s family, friends, players, teammates and colleagues,” Lee Reed, Georgetown’s director of intercollegiate athletics, said in a statement. “When I met Tasha, I knew she was a winner on the court, and an incredible person whose drive, passion and determination was second to none. She exhibited these qualities both as a leader and in her fight against breast cancer.
It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of former Georgia Tech associate head coach, Tasha Butts. ⁰⁰Butts played for the late Pat Summitt at Tennessee from 2000 to 2004, with the Vols going 124-17 in that span. After a Sweet 16 berth in her freshman season, Butts helped lead Tennessee to the Final Four in 2002 and back-to-back NCAA championship-game appearances in 2003 and 2004. She was part of four SEC regular season championship teams, losing only one SEC game during her career.
A Milledgeville, Ga., native, Butts is survived by her parents Spencer, Sr., and Evelyn, her brother Spencer, Jr., and her nephew Marquis.
