TAIPEI: The head of Taiwan's top China policy body said on Thursday (Sep 12) that the democratically-governed island will never surrender in the face of intensifying pressure from a "more aggressive" Beijing.

But faced with the"unprecedented pressure, our determination to safeguard our sovereignty and democratic system has never been so strong. This is our bottom line", Chiu Chui-cheng said in an English-language speech at a defence forum in Taipei. On Thursday, Taipei's defence ministry said 29 Chinese military aircraft, eight naval vessels and one official ship were detected in a 24-hour window ending at 6am local time.Lai - whom Beijing regards as a"dangerous separatist" - rejects China's claim of Taiwan, just as his predecessor Tsai Ing-wen did.
