As Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen plans to visit Guatemala and Belize and stop in the US along the way, the Biden administration is reminding China that Tsai's stops in New York and California are unofficial, merely stopovers, and in line with precedent.

The trip will begin on March 29 and last 10 days and nine nights, according to the Taiwanese government's Central News Agency. The visit is being billed as a"Democratic Partnership for Common Prosperity Journey."Tsai is expected to meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy when passing through California, and she will also deliver a speech at the Reagan Library outside of Los Angeles, per CNA.

Senior U.S. officials in Washington and Beijing have reportedly underscored to their Chinese counterparts in recent weeks that transit visits through the U.S. during broader international travel by the Taiwanese president have been routine in recent years, according to a senior administration official.
