Timberlake and SZA dance inside a set that’s shaped like a disco ball igloo, while SZA transforms into a disco ball herself with two different silver jumpsuits, both of which Ambrose designed. “It was my first time working with SZA and I admire her so much as an artist,” Ambrose says over the phone from New York City. “I was looking forward to taking her out of her comfort zone because she said that she hates being too glossy—she has a very unique texture to her look.
Ambrose has a long career of recontextualizing conventionally glamorous textiles by rendering shiny, luxe materials in sporty hip hop silhouettes. For this video, Ambrose yet again wanted to put an alternative spin on this type of Studio 54-era sheen. “We wanted to create this disco environment, but not just ’70s disco, but playing with the future of disco and creating this space that felt we were immersed in this ultimate world,” Ambrose says.
In addition to the two silver jumpsuits—one of which Ambrose made with a glass shard effect and alien-like hips, and the other based on an initial idea to use body paint—SZA dons a black-and-white
