The San Antonio-based research nonprofit has been contracting with NASA and commercial companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin to grow its space exploration business.

Data collected by SwRI and others under the Artemis program will help prepare astronauts to explore the moon and eventually Mars. The LMS project marks the first time scientists here will work with FireFly Aerospace, which garnered attention last year when its“We enjoy a good relationship with Firefly, but we both subcontract to, and take direction from, NASA,” Grimm said.Last year, SwRI reported a research volume of nearly $798 million, the most recorded by the institute. Schmid declined to disclose how much revenue the nonprofit receives from contracts with NASA and commercial groups.
The LMS program is part of a planned 12-day mission “to help understand the moon’s subsurface in a previously unexplored location,” SwRI. The project is being funded by NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative.
