Great Harwood's swimming pool frustration as sites ruled out after Mercer Hall closure

Senior councillors have ruled out three alternative sites for a swimming pool in Great Harwood following the proposed closure of the existing one in Mercer Hall.

The sites considered were at Windsor Road Recreation Ground adjacent to Tesco in central Great Harwood, land at Alan Ramsbottom Way and the former gas holder site on Balfour Street which are both on the outskirts of the township. The review followed local residents protests that Mercer Hall was to be closed as a leisure centre and the pool transferred to a new multi-million pound sports and fitness complex at Wilson’s Playing Field in Clayton-le-Moors.

“What we do need is positive engagement around how we can use this building effectively in the future. A number of people from Great Harwood have suggested while they accept that Mercer Hall can no longer continue in its present format they would want to see a leisure offer still located in the town and they have suggested three potential sites.
