A giant whale stole the show at the Summer Olympic Games, shooting out of the water as athletes competed in the women’s surfing semifinals
on the French Pacific island of Tahiti last month.

Adult females average 15m in length and weigh up to 40 tons, while adult males are slightly smaller. For many indigenous people across Polynesia, the marine animals are sacred.
