On Thursday, 25 April 2024, members of Maitland Flying Squad responded to a complaint of a hijacked motor vehicle in Jaftha K Masemola Road, Khayelitsha. Members were unable to trace the hijacked vehicle however, members observed a VW Polo without registration plates speeding away from them, where the hijacked vehicle’s reported location was. The members pursued the vehicle and a high speed chase ensued. During the vehicle chase, the driver of the Polo fired one gunshot from the window. The suspects refused to stop for the SAPS members, whilst the blue lights and siren of police vehicle were switched on.
The driver of the vehicle jumped out of the vehicle and ran away. The members found two pistols inside the vehicle and a third pistol outside the vehicle. Three suspects, aged between 25 and 40, were arrested on charges of attempted murder, attack on Police and the possession of prohibited firearms. Two of the suspects were wounded and taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment under police guard.
