Sutton Foster shares her TonyAwards prep and the reason why she has “Stop Apologizing” written on her dressing room mirror

, there’s a phrase written on her mirror: Stop Apologizing. As a two-time Tony winner and star of the TV showgone too soon—it’s hard to imagine that she has to apologize for, well, anything.

So, why the confidence-boosting mantra on her mirror? Foster explains why she wrote it, why TV was so alluring for so long, and what it’s like to come back to the stage and become best friends with Jackman, even when—The Music ManIt’s the happiest thing I’ve ever done. I just absolutely love it. Even my contractor came by and he was like, “How’s the show?” and I said, “I’m having the time of my life.”Everyone in the company seems that way, too. Their faces are 100% on, 100% of the time.

I just feel like my heart belongs on stage. But when I did television, the concept of having a weekend was mind-blowing. As a theater performer, I had never had a weekend. I never had holidays. I would love to have a balance of both, but I will say this: I have a five-year-old daughter, and the Broadway schedule is really hard because I only get to do maybe one or twoa week. There’s a lot of FaceTiming at the theater.

OK, so the night I saw the show, it seemed like you two broke character, but then I read that another writer said the same thing happened atOK. I am a rock. Hugh Jackman is not. I just threw him under the bus. No, but one of the things that our director [Jerry Zaks] said early on was when you’re watching two characters fall in love, you look for the moments where they make each other smile. So it’s sort of birthed out of that, and it’s a spontaneous moment that’s different every single night.
