Our Lady of the Smile church was destroyed by a fire on Thursday morning.

Police were called around 6:10 a.m. and confirmed no one was injured. An initial investigation determined the fire was suspicious in nature, RCMP said in a media release on Friday.

The church was built in 1953-1954, said Father Doug Jeffrey. It’s part of the Meadow Lake Catholic Church cluster, which also includes the churches in Meadow Lake and Green Lake.He said it’s the people of the community who are hurting now, as they built the church and celebrated life and death there.

The RCMP ask anyone with information to call the Meadow Lake detachment at 306-236-2570 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. The news seems to be flying at us faster all the time.
