Michael Holpin, 21, managed to escape from the back of a police car while wearing handcuffs.
He had been arrested for assaulting his girlfriend and tried to convince officers he was his twin brother.While they were checking his identity, Holpin managed to open the window and flee officers.Prosecutor Kathryn Lane told Cardiff Crown Court his initial crime was slapping his former girlfriend across the face following a ‘heated argument.’She said Holpin was ‘jealous and insecure’ and had struck his partner at her home in Llanhilleth, near Abertillery, before taking her car.
In a victim impact statement, Holpin’s ex said she was ‘really scared’ of him, and added: ‘I didn’t know what he was capable of’.He returned the car to his former partner’s house and police soon traced him into an industrial estate.
