Surrey, B.C., mayoral contest shaping up to be ‘mother of all battles,’ say some candidates and political insiders, by abbas_rana1 cdnpoli (unlocked)

Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal, left, former NDP MP and current B.C. MLA Jinny Sims, and former Liberal MP Gordie Hogg are some of the expected candidates to seek the Surrey City's top political job in the October municipal election.

“What happens in a fight like this, when it’s a mother of all battles, is every player [at the federal, provincial, and municipal level] gets involved. And coalitions are built and established, and shift,” said the insider, who spoke toHogg agreed with that assessment. “If you look at the experiences that people have had, there’s certainly a wide range and it may well be [the mother of all battles],” he said.

Despite Surrey’s spot as a Liberal stronghold making up four of the 158 MPs in the Liberal minority government, none of them are in cabinet. Some senior Liberals from the area have been privately complaining for a long time that Surrey should have representation in the federal cabinet. Ontario voters are also headed to the municipal polls in October, with the Brampton, Ont., mayoral race another one to watch. It also has three current and former MPsn, including Liberal MP Ruby Sahota , former Liberal MP Ramesh Sangha, and incumbent mayor Patrick Brown, who has represented Barrie, Ont., between 2006 and 2015 as a Conservative MP before winning the Ontario Progressive Conservative leadership race that year.

“It’s great for the citizens of Surrey that many qualified people are interested in running, and they had to make some choices,” he said. “That’s a healthy part of democracy.”“People are going to look at viability, my skill sets, what I have to offer, and everybody else who was running,” she said.
