There could be a surge in pension credit claimants after the Chancellor' decision to change who can apply for winter fuel payments

The benefit gives qualifying pensioners extra money to help with their living costs if they are over the state pension age – currently 66 in the UK – and on a low income. Pension credit can also help with housing costs such as ground rent or service charges. This is £218.15 per week if you’re single and £332.95 if you are a couple. The average amount of unclaimed benefit at the time was £2,200 per year, the figures showed.

According to Mr Webb, the modelling suggests that if one in four of those currently entitled to pension credit but not claiming it were now to put in a claim, this could wipe out around a third of Ms Reeves’ assumed savings from the policy – reducing the savings by nearly half a billion pounds.
