Alternative Number is billed as a way to keep your real number private, basically a digital burner phone.
This feature works like a digital burner phone only users can’t make calls or be the first to send messages.
Cybersecurity firm Surfshark, best known for its VPN product, has a new offering available within its Alternative ID range. That product is Alternative Number which gives subscribers a virtual US-based phone number where they can receive calls and receive and send messages. “It can be difficult to keep your phone number to yourself online. We’re constantly asked for our numbers whenever we post ad listings, shop online, or sign up for free products/services. But there’s no telling where your number ends up once you share it online. Spammers can scrape it from online ads, data brokers may be able to purchase it from the companies you share it with, and hackers might be able to steal it if the company you share it with isn’t secure enough.
While users can receive calls and messages, calls can’t be made using Alternative Number. Similarly, Alternative Number users can’t be the first to send a message, they can only reply to a message.
