The Supreme Court will begin to hear arguments Monday on a case that could change the ability for cities to enforce penalties for people camping in public.
For now, cities cannot make it a crime to sleep outside if shelter space is not available.“To me, it’s cruel and unusual punishment to leave people where they’re at to eventually pass away,” said Andrea Suarez , the executive director of the privately funded organization We Heart Seattle ., so she’ll be following along as this case makes its way through the nation’s highest court.
However, Seattle University professor and Homeless Rights Advocacy Project Founder Sara Rankin worries about the eventual Supreme Court decision. “We should be focused on providing resources that people will take and that will work for people," Daugaard said. "Not resources that people almost by design decline because they don’t match their needs. All courts have agreed that there’s no constitutional right to good shelter, or shelter that will work for the person."
