The Court’s murky ethical guidelines have left wide room for interpretation, which several justices have taken advantage of, a new report finds.

Supreme Court justices across the political spectrum used university appearances to increase personal book sales, mingled at events with big college donors, and lectured at all-expenses-paid academic trips, according to anThe U.S. Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C.

For instance, a visit to the University of Colorado law school in 2019 by Justice Elena Kagan prompted a university official to encourage a “larger donor to staff ratio” for a dinner with her, while a 2017 visit by Justice Sonia Sotomayor to Clemson University prompted university officials to invite $1 million-plus donors to the luncheon, according to the AP.

The university visits also functioned as a way for justices to increase personal book sales—aides of Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in particular, repeatedly urged the sites of Sotomayor’s visits to purchase more of the justice’s books ahead of the events.also found that teaching excursions by justices included trips to places like Italy, Iceland, and Hawaii.
