I am writing to you about the importance of awareness and push-through of Bill S.870 - Improving Access to Mental Health Act of 2021. This bill would improve services for older adults to have better access to mental health services and for social workers to bill Medicare up to 85% instead of 75%, thus creating more jobs and opportunities for licensed clinical social workers as well.
It is a social worker’s responsibility to our clients to advocate for what is best for them through our values of service and integrity. Older adults have always struggled with their mental health, but due to the pandemic and isolation, research has shown that older adults’ mental health has worsened. Putting our knowledge into advocating to legislators and the news is part of a social worker’s duty.
All in all, this bill will help older adults deal with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other mental health issues and will bring more awareness to the stigma that surrounds older adults and their mental health.
