Sainsbury's is going all out to compete with Aldi, but the budget retailer says it 'will always offer the lowest prices'
As well as increasing the number of items in its Aldi Price Match scheme and launching its Nectar Prices, which work similar to Tesco Clubcard, Sainsbury's is now bringing all of its budget products under the one label.
And as with Asda's Just Essentials, the products are brightly coloured - with yellow and orange labels - making them much easier to spot on your way around. It's something we've seen play out in our own weekly price comparison of shopping essentials, which has tracked prices at the same six supermarkets since March last year.
It refutes Roberts' claim about 'more customers coming back to us from the discounters' and says the latest official data shows that Aldi is the fastest-growing supermarket in the UK, with sales growing 21.2% during the 12 weeks to August 7, compared with growth of 9.3% at Sainsbury’s. I was able to pick up four-packs of Heinz beans and tomato soups for £4 each from Sainsbury's for example. While Aldi sells the beans for £3.95, it doesn't stock the soup. Nutella and Coca Cola are among just a few big names it does sell.
It wasn't exactly a big shop, but my £47 haul is just one example of how shoppers are mixing the budget buys with big brands to get everything they need in the one place.
