Superman won't even let Lex Luthor die.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Compassion and empathy are generally seen as some Superman's greatest strengths, with his virtues making him an icon just as much as any of his powers. Villains like Lex Luthor, however, can use these moral standards against the Man of Steel in times of need, turning Clark Kent's "Smallville values" against him.

One such instance can be seen in Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor #1 by Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings, and Tyler Smith. In the issue, Superman discovers that Lex Luthor has only a short time left to live after inadvertently poisoning his own body by experimenting with Kryptonite. Though Luthor is Superman's greatest nemesis, he calls out for Kal-El's aid, saying he knows that "Superman won't let me die.

That Luthor would ask for Superman's help shows his desperate position, as he says the thought of a world without Lex is worse than a world where Lex asks for Superman's help. Still, the egomaniacal villain can't help but get a few jabs in at the Man of Steel's expense. When Superman tries to make Lex promise he'll go to prison once a cure is found, Luthor asks: "Are you actually making your aid conditional? Of course not. That's not you.

In every sense, it would be easier for Clark to simply let Lex die, especially when his nemesis punishes him in every way possible for offering aid. But Superman wouldn't be Superman if he chose what lives were and were not worth saving. This very idea is explored heavily in Waid's Kingdom Come, an alternate-universe story showing Superman's rejection of superheroes who kill their villains.
