Most people know that Superman died and returned in the nineties. Fewer people are familiar with the stories that took place after his return, where the populace began to entertain the idea that the Man of Steel had a unique connection to the other side.
Most people know by now that Superman died and returned in the nineties. Fewer people are deeply familiar with the adventures and stories that took place immediately after his return. Superman took no time off after his return in 1993, as threats to truth and justice certainly took no time off in his absence.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Certainly one of the most tragic moments in Superman comics, it took place in Superman #84, written and penciled by Dan Jurgens, with finished art by Joe Rubinstein. This issue, which heralded the return of the Toyman in the most terrible way possible, was the start of a saga that informed readers of a new and unique responsibility that Superman had gained since his return from death.
A tragic and touching moment, but one which also relates important information about Superman's role after his return from the dead. Because Superman has the rare and unique experience of returning from death, he has gained an equally unique responsibility: helping his friends grieve. An intelligent, sensitive, articulate man, Superman has not just super-powers for fighting, but a superhuman gift for kindness and empathy.
If Superman had not had the unique experience of dying and returning that he had, his presence at Adam Grant's funeral might not have been as needed, or even as welcome. Instead, because of his compassion, and the weight of his experiences, Superman has become even more of a guiding light to the innocent. In a way, Superman's role here is not too different from a priest, providing guidance and reassurance to those in need.
