In times of trouble, leaders tend to fall back on a tried and trusted strategy – hanging on and hoping something turns up 🗳️ “We would be turkeys voting for Christmas to go soon,” warns a former minister 🖊️ katyballs

“We would be turkeys voting for Christmas to go soon,” warns a former minister. However, there are still some limits to how long Sunak could wait. I am yet to meet a single Tory MP who thinks calling an election in January – thereby having an election campaign over the Christmas break – is a savvy electoral move.

“You need to make sure people feel the benefit of it,” says one Government figure of the strategy. Not only are the priorities proving uphill –– even if Sunak reaches them, ministers need voters to have enough time to feel as though things are improving. Improving public finances, too, would allow the Prime Minister and his Chancellor Jeremy Hunt more scope for tax cuts.

“Right now voters aren’t listening. People are angry,” says one minister. “If we can show progress on the issues voters really care about that could change.” There is still a debate in government as to when in 2024 would be the best time to go. The default scenario has long been autumn 2024 given it gives Sunak the most time to try to turn his party’s electoral fortunes around.
