Sunak faces post-Brexit dilemma of tackling labour shortages while opposing high immigration 🔍 analysis by ChaplainChloe
Around a third of these are out of work due to being long term sick, but why can’t the remainder – students, people with children, retirees who can still work and other people who are unable to find a job – be supported into filling the vacancies in the market?
Labour would argue that this is due to inattentiveness from the Government and a lack of focus on support and skills. “There are more people that would want to go back to work than there are vacancies in the Labour market,” a Labour source said. “The problem is, for example, that if you’re over 50 and you want help getting back to work, but you don’t claim benefits, you can’t just walk into the job centre., but they could be using the £2bn underspend on Kickstart or Restart [employment schemes] to target these people right now.
The Government argues it is focused on creating “higher paid, higher quality jobs” – with a push to helping people “return to the workforce in the right way is central to our plans to reduce work inactivity”. The Department for Work and Pensions said: “Our Jobcentres work closely with employers to fill their vacancies and we urge more businesses to tap into local talent available through our Jobcentre Plus network.”
