Understanding solar switchbacks is key to understanding solar winds, and scientists think they've got it
A Solar Switchback captured by the Solar Orbiter, visible at the 8 o'clock position."I would say that this first image of a magnetic switchback in the solar corona has revealed the mystery of their origin," said Daniele Telloni, a research astronomer at the Astrophysical Observatory of Torino, Italy, who spotted the distortion in the data returned from the Solar Orbiter.
The joint Solar Orbiter project between NASA and the European Space Agency has effectively proved that switchbacks form when two different types of magnetic fields on the Sun – open and closed ones – bump into each other. The resultant collision forms an"S" shape wave in the Sun's magnetic field that emanates from the Sun out into the solar system.
