They have now broken ground on 58 luxury villas dubbed Lefika Villas, that will accommodate up to 400 additional guests. Sun International launched the expansion at a ground-turning ceremony this week where the villas will be constructed. “We engage with the councilors and the tribal chiefs in the area to make sure we have maximum benefit. With a project of this nature, the economic impetus needs to flow directly into the community so that we uplift it as a whole,” he told City Press on the sidelines of the launch.
“Our biggest challenge post-Covid is to get back to job positive. We need to focus on getting the revenue up and getting people to return [to the resort]. Last month and this month have been particularly exciting because occupancy has risen significantly,” he said.He said international visitors had started trickling back into the country but the recent events in Mpumalanga – where a German tourist was murdered in a hijacking – had set the tourism industry back a few steps.
The name Lefika, which means ‘stone’ in the Setswana language, pays homage to the adjacent stone-walled Itlholanoga heritage site. The settlement is located on the northern face of the hill overlooking the entire valley. The site is rated as a level five for historic significance, and is a designated provincial heritage site.
