“When you’re running vacancies, running short staffed or you just don’t have enough officers in general, you become reactive and you don’t have a chance to do anything proactively, which is not great for the community,” said Deputy Chief Jason Blacquiere.
Summerside Police Services is in the process of filling six new full-time positions for police officers. Deputy Chief Jason Blacquiere said the extra help will go a long way to addressing long-standing staffing concerns at the department while allowing the service to better serve the community. - Colin MacLeanThe department has implemented staffing changes which its leadership hopes will take pressure off front-line officers and better serve the community.
Of those new positions, three will directly replace six long-standing part-time positions. A combination of federal and provincial programs will pay for the other three. “There’s so many jobs in policing across Canada, literally thousands, people don’t have to work part-time anymore. There’s no pension, there’s no benefits, they miss out on a lot. So that pool of people just wasn’t there anymore. So, we recognized that we had to change the model of policing that we employed here in the city for the last 25 years or so,” said Blacquiere.
Coun. Barb Ramsay, who is the police services liaison on city council, said she was encouraged by the changes and singled out the new traffic unit specifically.
