Fifty years later, at age 84, Takagi points to that philosophy of inclusion as her proudest moment as the founder of a company that now includes four salons throughout Metro Vancouver, one in Victoria, and a Suki’s Academy that has trained more than 1,000 stylists since its start in 1978. That happened in 1979 when Takagi displayed her efforts at the Orovision hair show at Wembley Stadium in London where she competed against 28 countries.
Throughout her many years as a stylist — Takagi suffered a stroke about five years ago and is no longer able to cut hair — the complex challenge presented by creating a perfect haircut remains one of her favourite aspects of the profession. Noting that she’s “very proud” of the work her son has done with her salon company and academy, she stressed the importance of investing in future generations in order to see them carry on the efforts of those who came before them.Article content
