Local entities have joined forces to tackle erosion along the Brazos River.

The Sugar Land City Council recently authorized application for a $4 million grant through the Texas General Land Office to be combined with $56 million that the county is seeking in grant money.

One study commissioned by the city and another by the county concluded that if left unchecked, riverbank erosion would threaten many areas along the Brazos within 30 years, including residences, city and county infrastructure, roads, levees, parks, hurricane evacuation routes, highways and bridges. Erosion threatens Memorial Park, University Boulevard and the Ditch H area of the city, which is adjacent to, which protects homes, critical infrastructure and schools.
