Sudanese pin hopes on Jeddah talks between warring factions: Sudanese are pinning their hopes on talks in Jeddah between envoys of warring factions to end bloodshed that has killed hundreds and triggered a mass exodus, but there is no sign lasting relief…
There has been no word on the progress of the talks which began on Saturday between the army and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in the Saudi Red Sea port city.
Salah witnessed heavy fighting and a neighbour getting shot in the abdomen in his central Khartoum district of Al Amarat last month, before renting a flat for his family in the south-east of the capital. Sudan's Forces of Freedom and Change, a political grouping leading the plan to transfer to civilian rule, welcomed the Jeddah talks on Saturday.
Thousands of people are pushing to leave from Port Sudan on boats to Saudi Arabia, paying for expensive commercial flights via Sudan's only working airport or using evacuation flights.

Clashes Persist Despite Saudi-Hosted Sudan Peace TalksBattles flared in Sudanese capital Khartoum on Sunday, May 7, 2023, with fighting between the armed forces and the powerful Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group well into its fourth week. Representatives from both parties are meanwhile attending talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, mediated by the U.S. and Saudi Arabia with the aim of achieving a sustainable truce. Multiple ceasefire agreements announced since the start of the fighting on April 15 have been breached consistently. Fierce battles in Sudan have killed 700 people, mostly civilians, with thousands more wounded. There has been a mass exodus of more than 100,000 people, including Sudanese citizens and foreign nationals. Both sides have repeatedly said they signed up to ceasefires, to facilitate humanitarian corridors, rather than to end the fighting - despite agreeing to the Saudi-hosted talks. On Saturday, May 6, RSF leader Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo confirmed his group's attendance at the talks. He said he hoped they would achieve their intended goal to "establish a ceasefire, open humanitarian corridors, and provide essential services to the people of Sudan." Andreas Krieg of King's College London told the French AFP news agency that "the battle for Khartoum is quickly developing into a war of attrition where both sides have similar capabilities and capacities".
